Mahabharata

Mahabharata
In this colossal epic poem of 220,000 lines is contained the background of Vedic myth. The pre-Brahmanic version of this work may be dated to 500 BC or even earlier, and the eighteen books into which it was eventually assembled may be taken as covering the period of the Great Migration when the Indo-Germanic tribes were advancing southwards into the Indian mainland and driving out or enslaving the aborigines. Naturally, the work has suffered severely from the censorship of the Brahman priests, but in spite of all their efforts it is still possible to conjure up an idea of a series of campaigns which led to the conquest of India. Kings and princes and the generals of the opposing armies have long since been transmuted into gods or demons, Devas or Asuras, and on their shoulders have been thrust the characteristics of the gods which the conquerors brought with them, or which they seized as spoils of victory.
